Letter from Charles Darwin to his wife, Emma.

The Happy Birthday Charles Darwin project is being organised by Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council as Darwin was born in Shrewsbury on 12 February 1809.

For the next 27 years he was a resident of the town. During that period, he developed his passion for the natural world, attended two universities and circumnavigated the globe on The Beagle.

The ideas he developed as a consequence of those years still resonate through modern science and society. For many, he has become a figurehead for the contribution that science has made to humanity.

Darwin’s birthday book

Two hundred years after his birth, people around the world will be invited to mark the occasion by sending a birthday card or writing a letter to the young Charles Darwin in his home town using a special PO Box number.

As well as encouraging students and citizens, key academics and public figures will also be asked to participate. Selected submissions will be included in a book to be published before the end of 2009.

The project will be launched on 12 February 2009. For more information about this project, please contact Jon King.
